in lions and this de their fear greater. even the red dwarfs, who khat he ca as a friend, stood with open uths anuld not speak. so of the blabsp; dwarfs, who had been of nikabriks party, began to edge away. but all the talkingbeasts surged round the lion, with purrs and grunts and squeaks and whinneys of delight, fawning on hiwith their tails, rubbing against hi toug hireverently withtheir noses and going t&a;a;lt;df&a;a;lt;/dfn&a;a;gt;o and fro under his body aween his legs. if you have ever seena little cat loving a big dog whoit knows and trusts, you will have a pretty goodpicture of their behaviour. theer, leading caspian, forced his way through the crowd ofanils.

&a;a;a;quot;this is caspian, sir,&a;a;a;quot; he said. and caspia and kissed the lionspaw.

&a;a;a;quot;wele, prince,&a;a;a;quot; said aslan. &a;a;a;quot;do you feel yourself suffit to take upthe kingship of narnia?”

  &a;a;a;quot;i - i dont think i do, sir,&a;a;a;quot; said caspian. &a;a;a;quot;ionly a kid.”

&a;a;a;quot;good,&a;a;a;quot; said aslan. &a;a;a;quot;if you had felt yourself suffit, it would havebeen a proof that you were not. therefore, under us and uhe high king, you shall beking of narnia, lord of cair paravel, and eeror of the lone islands. you and your heirswhile your race lasts. and your ation - but what have we here?&a;a;a;quot; for at thatnt a curious little processi - eleven mice, six of whocarriedbetween thesothing on a litter de of branches, but the litter was no bigger than alarge atlas. no one has ever seen ce re woebegohan these. they were plastered withd so with blood too - and their ears were down and their whiskers drooped andtheir tails dragged in the grass, and their leader piped on his slender pipe alancholy tuer lay what seed little better than a da heap of fur; all that wasleft of reepicheep. he was still breathing, but re dead than alive, gashed withinnurable wounds, one paw crushed, and, where his tail had been, a bau.

  &a;a;a;quot;now, lucy,&a;a;a;quot; said aslan.

lucy had her diand bottle out in a nt. though only a drop was neededon each of reepicheeps wounds, the wounds were so ny that there was a long andanxious silence before she had finished and the master mouse sprang frothelitter. his ha at oo his sword hilt, with the other he twirled his whiskers. hebowed.

&a;a;a;quot;hail, aslan!&a;a;a;quot; ca his shrill voice. &a;a;a;quot;i have the honour -&a;a;a;quot; but then hesuddenly stopped.

the fact was that he still had no tail - whether that lucy had fotten itor that herdial, though iuld heal woundsuld not ke things grow again.reepicheep beca aware of his loss as he de his bow; perhaps it altered sothingin his balance.

he looked over his right shoulder. failing to see his tail, he strained hisneck further till he had to turn his shoulders and his whole body followed. but by that tihis hind-quarters had turoo and were out of sight. therained his nebsp; looking over his shoulder again, with the sa result. only after he had turned pletelyround three tis did he realize the dreadful truth.

&a;a;a;quot;i afounded,&a;a;a;quot; said reepicheep to aslan. &a;a;a;quot;i apletely out oftenance. i st crave your indulgence for appearing in this unseey fashion.”

&a;a;a;quot;it bees you very well, sll one,&a;a;a;quot; said aslan.

&a;a;a;quot;all the sa,&a;a;a;quot; replied reepicheep, &a;a;a;quot;if anythinuld be done... perhapsher majesty?”

and here he bowed to lucy.

&a;a;a;quot;but what do you want with a tail?&a;a;a;quot; asked aslan.

&a;a;a;quot;sir,&a;a;a;quot; said the mouse, &a;a;a;quot;ieat and sleep and die forking withoutone. but a tail is the honour and glory of a mouse.”

&a;a;a;quot;i have sotis wondered, friend,&a;a;a;quot; said aslan, &a;a;a;quot;whether you do not thinktoo ch about your honour.”

&a;a;a;quot;highest of all high kings,&a;a;a;quot; said reepicheep, &a;a;a;quot;pertto rend you thata very sll size has beeowed on us mice, and if we did not guard nity,so (who weigh worth by inches) would allow theelves very unsuitable pleasantriesat our expehat is why i have been at so pains to ke it known that no onewho does not wish to feel this sword as near his heart as ireach shall talk in presence about traps or toasted cheese or dles: no, sir - not the tallest fool innarnia!&a;a;a;quot; here he glared very fiercely up at wileweather, but the giant, who was always astage behind everyone else, had not yet dvere&a;a;lt;q&a;a;gt;..&a;a;lt;/q&a;a;gt;d what was being talked about down athis feet, and so ssed the point.

&a;a;a;quot;why have your followers all drawn their swords, y i ask?&a;a;a;quot; said aslan.

&a;a;a;quot;may it please yh majesty,&a;a;a;quot; said the seouse, whose na eepiceek, &a;a;a;quot;we are all waiting to cut off our own tails if our chief st go withouthis. we will not bear the sha of wearing an honour which is deo the high mouse.”

&a;a;a;quot;ah!&a;a;a;quot; roared aslan. &a;a;a;quot;you have quered . you have great hearts. not forthe sake of ynity, reepicheep, but for the love that is between you and yourpeople, and still re for the kindness your people showedlong ago when you ate away the &a;nbsrds that boundooable (and it was then, though you have longfotten it, that you began to be talking mice), you shall have your tail again.”

before aslan had finished speaking the ail was in its place. then, ataslans and, peter bestowed the knighthood of the order of the lion on caspian, and caspian, as soon as he was knighted, hielf bestowed it on trufflehunterand trukin and reepicheep, and de doctor elius his lord cellor, andfird the bulgy bear in his hereditary offiarshal of the lists. and there wasgreat applause.

after this the telrine soldiers, firy but without taunts or blows, weretaken across the ford and all put under lod key iown of beruna and givenbeef and beer.

they de a great fuss about wading in the river, for they all hated andfeared running water just as ch as they hated and feared woods and anils. but in theend the nuisance was over: and then theparts of that long day began.

lucy, sitting close to aslan and divinely fortable, wondered what thetrees were doing. at first she thought they were rely dang; they were certainlygoing round slowly in two circles, one froleft tht and the other frht toleft. theiced that they kept throwing sothing down ire of bothcircles. sotis she thought they were cutting off long strands of their hair; at othertis it looked as if they were breaking off bits of their fingers - but, if so, they had plentyof fio spare and it did not hurt the but whatever they were throwing down, whe&a;a;lt;s&a;a;gt;&a;a;lt;/s&a;a;gt;n itreached the ground, it beca brushwood or dry sticks. then three or four of the reddwarfs ca forward with their tinder boxes a light to the pile, which firstcrackled, and then blazed, and finally roared as a woodland bonfire on dsuer night oughtto do. and everyo down in a wide circle round it.

then bahus and silenus and the maenads began a dance, far wilder than thedance of the trees; not rely a dance for fun ay (though it was that too)but a gice of plenty, and where their hands touched, and where their feet fell, the feast ca ience sides of roasted at that filled the grove with delicioussll, and wheaten cakes and oaten cakes, honey and nloured sugars and creaasthick as pe and as soth as still water, peaches, arines, pogranates, pears, grapes, strawberries, raspberries pyrads and cataracts of fruit. then, iwooden cups and bowls and zers, wreathed with ivy, ca the wines; dark, thies likesyrups of lberry juice, and clear red ones like red jellies liquefied, and yellowwines and green wines and yellow-green and greenish-yellow.

but for the tree people different fare rovided. when lucy saw clodsleyshovel and his les scuffling up the turf in various places (which bahus hadpointed out to the

and realized that the trees were going to eat earth it gave her rather ashudder. but when she saw the earths that were actually brought to theshe felt quitedifferent. they began with a rich brown loathat looked alst exactly like clate; so likeclate, in fact, that ednd tried a piece of it, but he did not find it at all nibsp; when the ri had taken the edge off their huhe trees turo ah of thekind you see in sorset, which is alst pink. they said it was lighter and sweeter. atthe&a;a;lt;rk&a;a;gt;藏书网&a;a;lt;/rk&a;a;gt; cheese stage they had a chalky soil, and the on to delicate fes of thefi gravels powdered with choice silver sand. they drank very little wine, and it dethe hollies very talkative: for the st part they queheir thirst with deepdraughts of ngled dew and rain, flavoured with forest flowers and the airy taste of thethi clouds.

thus aslaed the narnians till long after the su had died away, and the stars had e out; and the great fire, now hotter but less noisy, shone like abea in the dark woods, and the frighteelrines saw it frofar away and wondered whatit ght an. the best thing of all about this feast was that there was no breakingup oing

away, but as the talk grew quieter and slower, oer another wouldbegin to nod and finally drop off to sleep with feet towards the fire and good friends oher side, till at last there was silence all round the circle, and the chattering of waterover sto the ford of berunuld be heard once re. but all night aslan and the moongazed upon each other with joyful and unblinking eyes.

day ssengers (who were chiefly squirrels and birds) were sent allover the try with a proclation to the scattered telrines - including, of &a;nbsurse, the prisoners in beruna. they were told that caspian was now king and thatnarnia would heh belong to the talkis and the dwarfs and dryads and faunsand other creatures quite as ch as to the n. any who chose to stay uhe newditions ght do so; but for those who did not like the idea, aslan would provideanother ho.

anyone who wished to go there st e to aslan and the kings at the fordof beruna by noon on the fifth day. you y igihat this caused plenty of head- scratg ang the telrines. so of the chiefly the young ones, had, likecaspian, heard stories of the old days and were delighted that they had e back. theywere already king friends with the creatures. these all decided to stay in narnia. butst of the older n, especially those who had been iortant under miraz, were sulkyand had no wish to live in a try where theuld not rule the roost. &a;a;a;quot;live herewith a lot of bloong perf anils! no fear,&a;a;a;quot; they said. &a;a;a;quot;and ghosts too,&a;a;a;quot; soadded with a shudder. &a;a;a;quot;thats what those there dryads really are. its not y.&a;a;a;quot; theywere also suspicious. &a;a;a;quot;i dont trust e&a;a;a;quot; they said. &a;a;a;quot;not with that awful lion andall. he wont keep his claws off us long, youll see.&a;a;a;quot; but then they were equally suspiciousof his offer to give thea new ho. &a;a;a;quot;take us off to his den a us one by one stlikely,&a;a;a;quot; they ttered. and the re they talked to one ahe sulkier and resuspicious they beca. but on the appointed day re than half of theturned up.

at one end of the glade aslan had caused to be set up two stakes of wood, higher than a ns head and about three feet apart. a third, and lighter, piece of woodwas bound across theat the top, uniting the so that the whole thing looked like adoorway fronowhere into nowhere. in front of this stood aslan hielf with peter onhis right and caspian on his left. grouped round thewere susan and lucy, trukin and trufflehuhe lord elius, glenstor reepicheep, and others. thechildren and the dwarfs had de good use of the royal wardrobes in what had been thecastle of miraz and was now the castle of caspian, and what with silk and cloth ofgold, with snowy linen glang through slashed sleeves, with silver il shirts andjewelled sword-hilts, with gilt helts ahered bos, they were alst thtto look at.

even the beasts wore rich s about their necks. yet nobodys eyes wereon theor the children. the living and strokable gold of aslans shohenbsp; all. the rest of the old narnians stood down each side of the glade. at the far end stoodthe telrines.

the sun shone brightly and pennants fluttered in the light wind.

&a;a;a;quot;men of telr,&a;a;a;quot; said aslan, &a;a;a;quot;you who seek a new land, hearwords. iwill send you all to your own try, which i know and you do not.”

&a;a;a;quot;we dont reer telr. we dont know where it is. we dont know what itis like,”

  gruled the telrines.

&a;a;a;quot;you ca into narnia out of telr,&a;a;a;quot; said aslan. &a;a;a;quot;but you ca into telrfroanother place. you do not belong to this world at all. you ca hither, certain geions ago, out of that sa world to which the high kierbelongs.”

at this, half the telrines began whiering, &a;a;a;quot;there you are. told you so.hes going to kill us all, send us right out of the world,&a;a;a;quot; and the other half beganthrowing out their chests and slapping one another on the bad whispering, &a;a;a;quot;there you are.might have guessed we didnt belong to this place with all its queer, nasty, unnaturalcreatures. were of royal blood, youll see.&a;a;a;quot; and even caspian and elius and thechildren turo aslan with looks of azent on their faces.

&a;a;a;quot;peace,&a;a;a;quot; said aslan in the low voice which was o his growl. theearth seed to shake a little and every living thing in the grove beca still as stone.

&a;a;a;quot;you, sir caspian,&a;a;a;quot; said aslan, &a;a;a;quot;ght have known that yould be no trueking of narnia unless, like the kings of old, you were a son of adaand ca fronbsp; the world of ada sons. and so you are. many years ago in that world, in a deep sea ofthat world which is called the south sea, a shipload of pirates were driven by stornbsp; on an island.

and there they did as pirates would: killed the natives and took the nativewon for wives, and de palwine, and drank and were drunk, and lay in the shadeof the paltrees, and woke up and quarrelled, and sotis killed one another. and inone of these frays six were put to flight by the rest and fled with their won into thetre of the island and up a untain, a, as they thought, into a cave to hide.but it was one of the gical places of that world, one of the ks or chas between chatworld and this. there were ny ks or chas between worlds in old tis, butthey have grown rarer. this was one of the last: i do not say the last. and so theyfell, or rose, or blundered, or dropped right through, and found theelves in this world, inthe land of telr which was then unpeopled. but why it was unpeopled is a long story:i will not tell it now. and in telr their desdants lived and beca a fierdproud people; and after ny geions there was a fane in telr and they invadednarnia, which was then in so disorder (but that also would be a long story), andquered it and ruled it. do you rk all this well, king caspian?”

&a;a;a;quot;i do indeed, sir,&a;a;a;quot; said caspian. &a;a;a;quot;i was wishing that i ca of a rehonourable lineage.”

&a;a;a;quot;you e of the lord adaand the lady eve,&a;a;a;quot; said aslan. &a;a;a;quot;and that is bothhonour enough to erect the head of the poorest beggar, and sha enough to bow theshoulders of the greatest eeror oh. be tent.”

  caspian bowed.

&a;a;a;quot;and no;quot; said aslan, &a;a;a;quot;you n and won of telr, will you go back tothat island in the world of n frowhich your fathers first ca? it is no bad plabsp; the race of those pirates who first found it has died out, and it is withoutinhabitants. there are good wells of fresh water, and fruitful soil, and tier for building, and fishin the lagoons; and the other n of that world have not yet dvered it. the chasis openfor your return; but this i st warn you, that once you have gh, it will closebehind you for ever. there will be no re erce between the worlds by that door.”

there was silence for a nt. then a burly, det looking fellow angthe telrine soldiers pushed forward and said:&a;a;a;quot;well, ill take the offer.”

&a;a;a;quot;it is well chosen,&a;a;a;quot; said aslan. &a;a;a;quot;and because you have spoken first, stronggic is upon you. your future in that world shall be good. e forth.”

the n, now a little pale, ca forward. aslan and hiurt drew aside, leaving hifree aess to the ety doorway of the stakes.

&a;a;a;quot;gh it,son,&a;a;a;quot; said aslan, bending towards hiand toug thens h his own. as soon as the lions breath ca about hi a new look cainto the ns eyes - startled, but not unhappy - as if he were trying to reersothing. then he squared his shoulders and walked into the door.

everyones eyes were fixed on hi they saw the three pieces of wood, andthrough thethe trees and grass and sky of narnia. they saw the ween thedoorposts: then, in one sed, he had vaterly.

frothe other end of the glade the reining telrines set up a wailing.&a;a;a;quot;ugh! whats happeo hi do you an to rder us? &a;a;lt;u&a;a;gt;藏书网&a;a;lt;/u&a;a;gt;we wont go that way.&a;a;a;quot; and thenone of the clever telrines said:&a;a;a;quot;we dont see any other world through those sticks. if you want us tobelieve in it, why doesnt one of you go? all your own friends are keeping well away frothesticks.”

instantly reepicheep stood forward and bowed. &a;a;a;quot;ifexalebe of anyservice, aslan,&a;a;a;quot; he said, &a;a;a;quot;i will take eleven ce through that arch at your biddingwithout a nts delay.”

&a;a;a;quot;nay, little one,&a;a;a;quot; said aslan, laying his velvety paw ever so lightly onreepicheeps head.

&a;a;a;quot;they would do dreadful things to you in that world. they would show you atfairs. it is others who st lead.”

&a;a;a;quot;e on,&a;a;a;quot; said peter suddenly to ednd and lucy. &a;a;a;quot;our tis up.”

&a;a;a;quot;what do you an?&a;a;a;quot; said ednd.

&a;a;a;quot;this way,&a;a;a;quot; said susan, who seed to know all about it. &a;a;a;quot;bato thetrees. weve got to ge.”

  &a;a;a;quot;ge what?&a;a;a;quot; asked lucy.

&a;a;a;quot;our clothes, ourse,&a;a;a;quot; said susan. &a;a;a;quot;nice fools wed look on the platfornbsp; of an english station in these.”

&a;a;a;quot;but our other things are at caspians castle,&a;a;a;quot; said ednd.

&a;a;a;quot;no, theyre not,&a;a;a;quot; said peter, still leading the way into the thickestwood. &a;a;a;quot;theyre all here. they were brought down in buhisits all arranged.”

&a;a;a;quot;was that what aslan was talking to you and susan about this &a;a;a;quot;asked lucy.

&a;a;a;quot;yes - that and other things,&a;a;a;quot; said peter, his face very sole. &a;a;a;quot;i ttell it to you all.

there were things he wao say to su andbecause were not ingback to narnia.”

&a;a;a;quot;never?&a;a;a;quot; cried ednd and lu disy.

&a;a;a;quot;oh, you two are,&a;a;a;quot; answered peter. &a;a;a;quot;at least, frowhat he said, iprettysure he ans you to get bae day. but not su and . he says were getting tooold.”

&a;a;a;quot;oh, peter,&a;a;a;quot; said lucy. &a;a;a;quot;what awful bad lubsp; you bear it?”

&a;a;a;quot;well, i think i ,&a;a;a;quot; said peter. &a;a;a;quot;its all rather different frowhat ithought. youll uand when it es to your last ti. but, quick, here are ourthings.”

it was odd, and not very o take off their royal clothes and to eba their school things (not very fresh now) into that great assely. one or two ofthe nastier telrines jeered. but the other creatures all cheered and rose up inhonour of peter the high king, and queen susan of the horn, and king ednd, and queen lubsp; there were affeate and (on lucys part) tearful farewells with all their oldfriends - anil kisses, and hugs frobulgy bears, and hands wrung by trukin, and a lasttickly, whiskerish erace with trufflehunter. and ourse caspian offered thehorn back to susan and ourse susan told hito keep it. and then, wonderfully andterribly, it was farewell to aslan hielf, aer took his place with susans hands onhis shoulders and ednds on hers and lucys on his and the first of the telrines onlucys, and so in a long lihey ved forward to the door. after that ca a ntwhich is hard to describe, for the children seed to be seeing three things at once. onewas the uth of a cave opening into the glaring green and blue of an island in thepacific, where all the telrines would find theelves the nt they were through the door. thesed was a glade in narnia, the faces of dwarfs as, the deep eyes ofaslan, and the white patches on the badgers cheeks. but the third (which rapidlyswallowed up the
